Wiki Edit Review

National Park followed in Manuel Antonio's footsteps and did flinch when I added content. I am going to venture to say that my edits were not ballsy enough or they were just thoroughly researched. ( I am hoping for the later.) The Melbourne article only axed my contribution to the After checking the history of all my articles I feel that I made contributions appealing to, or unobtrusive, to the wiki community as they were hardly ever even mentioned. In the Manuel Antonio article, I made a fair number of the additions since last September. Only one other individual had reoccurring additions. My best bet is that it is a US retiree spending his lazy mornings in the towns bustling Internet cafe/town hub. Hempfield High School and Corcovado grammar "errors". It turns out that I am not as familiar with Australian English as I had previously thought. I will definitely remember "transport", "favourite", and "centre" from now on.
All in all it seems, as I have previously stated above, that my article additions were pretty mild and did not cause much commotion among fellow editors. Even though my impact was fairly small to the wiki community, I am proud that I now know how to actively edit and contribute to share my experiential knowledge to the world...or maybe just with our class. :)

Manuel Antonio: Final Edit!

My very last wiki edit was done on Manuel Antonio. I added some illustrive words to describe the appeal of the beaches located within the park. I drew from memory and facts on the beaches' size and structure that: "With their large light sand berms, it is easy to see why they attract beach goers of all ages" and so added it to the article. To check out all of Manuel Antonio and its glory check out Wikipedia.

Final Wiki Edit: Melbourne

The final edit I made to the Melbourne article was to spruce up some of the working to make it more fun to read. My major contribution came in the form of: Cycling in Melbourne is a popular pastime,"as one can tell from the bevy of cyclists and paths that lay all throughout the city", as well as a spectator sport. I had to be careful when adding because this is a site monitored by the Australian gov't and they are always quick to delete additions not up to par. Re: Slashdot Article: Porn Link Punishable by Law

As I scrolled down the postings on slashdot, I came across a header that read "Can you imagine posting a link to a website that would get you arrested by the police?" Well apparently your posting behavior is regulation worthy...at least in In Hong Kong. As we discussed in class, the Chinese Internet behavior is HEAVILY overseen by government regulations. One unlucky middle-age man was unfortunate enough to experience that first hand, as he has been heavily fined for posting a porn link in an adult discussion forum. According to the article, the Internet Society chairman Charles Mok Nai-kwong said the court case raised several concerns. 'In this case, the court has given a new direction to the public concerning the responsibility of Internet users,' he said. For more info on the porn posting that raised a ruckus, check out the indiscretions.

Re: Naked Conversations Blog

Can IPODS Disrupt Pacemakers?! This was the title in a very interesting posting on the Naked Conversations Blog. As the article read, a Michigan Student conducted a series of tests in regards to the distance of an ipod from a pacemaker and the disruption occurance. It turns out that when held 2 inches from a pacemaker, an ipod (while playing) cause disruptions in half of all tests. While the results have yet to be verified by officials the implications of the test is quite unnerving. There was no note to what style of music was playing...:)

Class Discussion: Personal Website

In lieu of our class discussion on html coding, I thought it would be fitting to research the steps in setting up your own personal website.
  • The first step in setting up a site is finding an available domain name. This can be done by visiting a number of hosting sites; such as Godaddy.com or Hostmysite.com. It costs anywhere from $8-$20/ year to reserve the name.
  • The second step is to find a server to host your site. This can also be done in correlation with the Godaddy.com or Hostmysite.com sites. They cost anywhere from $4-$80 dollars a month depending on what server service you opt for.
  • The third step to setting up your very own website it to access the page through the editor. This is the step that opens your blank wesite! GET EXCITED
  • AND FINALLY...START CODING!
There you have it, the 101 version to setting up your own site. Visit GoDaddy for more information.

Corcovado National Park: Final Edit

For my final Corcovado Park edit, I decided to add the participants in the conservation effort centered around the park. These additions can be found under the sub-category of creation and threats. To view the changes and get a feel for who is helping out click here.

Hempfield High School Final Wiki Edit

As my final post to the HHS article, I decided to wrap up the project with a positive statistic. I chose to add the 2006 test scores for the PSSA's relative to the rest of the state. Congrats are in order for those students who out performed the PA state average by 25-30% in each catagory. To check out the article addition, click this.

Wiki Edit: Manuel Antonio National Park

Today I added some interesting information concerning outlets to view biodiversity in Maunuel Antonio National Park. As one can see in the article, I added the astute observation of : "Scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking provide great opportunities to experience the tropical wildlife that enriches Manuel Antonio, arguably one of the country's most beautiful and protected costal areas." I have experienced first hand the wonders of Manuel Antonio's biodiversity through these methods and it is definately something that I will never forget.

Wiki Edit: Melbourne Australia

Today I tackled the Melbourne article on Wikipedia. This is by far the most difficult one to make changes to, due to the fact it is so well written and conclusive in the first place. It seems to me that this was developed by a resident or guru on the city, as there is so much depth to the article. For this, my second edit, I decided to just run through the entire article and proofread for grammatical errors. I found only differences in spelling, but I decided to "fix" them any way. Such corrections were under the history and society & culture subheadings. The changes I made include changing centre to center and transport to transportation. This small changes can be viewed here. Ciao.

Thoughts on Class Topic: The Richness of Amazon

Today in class we talked about richness and reach and how they relate to delivering value to a company. Amazon was denoted as a company/service high is richness. That is, they have a highly personalized service that delivers value to their company...kind of like an electronic salesman. This gives Amazon a competitive edge in that it personalizes a page for every one of its clientele. It even makes suggestions for future reading material based upon previous purchases. This in turn leads to customer lock-in, making the cost of switching service larger...I mean, who wants to give up on a service that knows what you like to read about and gives you titles to check out! To check out the richness of Amazon<-- click here --> :)

Spirits for Spring Break and Beyond

In response to steve's post on spring cocktails from Cancun, I have decided to direct people's attention to one of my favorite sites when it comes to mixing/ordering the perfect drink: Webtender. This site teaches you how to make some of the craziest and most sun-inspired drinks around...that is assuming you are 21. This site is geared towards helping novices of mixology find and make some pretty cool theme inspired drinks, perfect for any party or night out/in. Check it out and see what new beverage you can make this weekend.

Wiki Edit: Hempfield High School

Wiki edit two for the week: Hempfield High School

Today I added the fact that the eight time Pennsylvania state champion boys volleyball team is coached by Mr. Mike Vogel. He is an outstanding coach who has led both the boys and girls volleyball teams to countless league, district, and state titles. Way to go Mr. Vogel and Black Knight Volleyball!

Wiki Edit: Corcovado National Park

I made another addition to the Corcovado wiki article. (caulk it up to two!) I decided to add the interesting fact that Corcovado is a prime place to see
red-eyed tree frog (listen for his single-note "cluck" sound when walking), the glass frog with its transparent skin, and poison-arrow frogs. The only advice I have is for travelers is to be weary of where you put your hands for these little guys pack a poison punch! Ouch!

Wiki Edit: Corcovado National Park

I chose to add the fact you can get to the Corcovado National Park via Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay. These two towns serve as the main entry points to the park. Puerto Jimenez requires the traveler to hike through 23 km of dense tropical, but all of the effort is definitely worth it! You'll ford rivers and scale embankments...a verifiable explorer. The Drake Bay entrance takes you to the Corcovado ranger station by sea. The water is crystal clear and the natural coves and fresh water inlets dot the beautiful coastline. My advice: walk the trail in and take the water taxi out...and be sure to bring a moisture proof camera! :)

Dell idea generation turned sour

Dell has recently instituted a program geared towards customer idea generation called IdeaStorm. This program solicits bonified customer suggestions to enhance their machines. According to Modern Marketing, Dell, at the request of 135,000 people, promised to create pre-installed Linux or OpenOffice machines, "thrilling open source fans everywhere". However, once Dell looked into it's feable promise, they realised it wasn't a viable option - and had to ignore all of the requests....Guess they should do their research on CRM.

"I searched in vain"

I decided to search in vain...and the results were pretty cool. :) After completing a "vanity search", I came across my blog as the primary result. There are a lot of accomplised Jennifer Bosch's in this world ,according to previous vanity searches, so this was kind of cool to see my name up there with all the marathon runners, PHD's, and published biologists. That's all for now. Ciao :)

Re: Alex's 'blog' Post

A lot of shows have started the mention of blogs in their scripts. Not unlike Scrubs, as mentioned on Alex's blog under the posting Blog, The Today Show on NBC talks about blogging all of the time too. The Today Show has infact just instituted a new blog called allDAY that they mention almost every morning during the program. It is open to viewer feedback and conversation on topics that have been addressed and products mentioned during the show. In fact NBC, the parent company of the Today Show, has a blogging tab on their corporate website that directs you to a host of different blogs concerning their all of their shows and forums for conversation. Blogging has now become a new wave of cool on many TV shows and within many broadcast networks. EMBRACE THE BLOG.

Battle of the Media

Viacom Vs. YouTube (Google)
"If there is one trial that I would want ringside seats to, this is it. On one side, you have the ex-champion of the content world in analog times, Viacom and all of its brands. And on the other side, you've got the newly minted champion of the digital world." -Kaan Yigit

After reading the article "Viacom vs. Google--A $1 Billion Test" that was distributed in class, I decided to dig a little futher. What has become apparent to me through the course of my readings is that there is a fine line between sharing media between users and stepping on the toes of a corporation's copyrights. What YouTube has done, in essence, is dig a heel hard into Viacom's billion dollar adverstising "Big Toe" by offering clips of their shows ad free.
This could potentially sway users from watching the ad laden shows on TV (Viacom) and instead get their broadcast fix on the Web (YouTube)... thus causing Viacom ratings to go down and key ad accounts for Viacom to withdraw their funds. Needless to say, Viacom is not happy about it and is ready to back that feeling with a whopping $1 Billion law-suit. According to copyright infringement law, a Web site (YouTube) can be held liable if:
1. The copywright infringment is so pervaisive that the Web site should have been aware of it. (ie full show clips)
2. The Web site induces users to post pirated material.
3. The Web site profits from the violations.

It looks to me that Google may be experiencing a rocky-road ahead.
Moral of the story: Watch where you step.

Viacom vs. YouTube Showdown.

Melbourne Wiki Edit

Yesterday I decided to tackle the Melbourne, Australia article on Wikipedia. This specific article posed a challenge for me in that the article already has a lot of information concerning the city already posted. As a remedy, I decided to add a bit of local flare to an otherwise solid article. I decided to add a snipit concerning the Victoria Market in the central of the city of Melbourne in Australia. Being from Lancaster PA, I am constantly fascinated by other cities that support market type events as well. After having spent 2 whole afternoons wandering in and out of Victoria Market's vast 3 vendor block spanse a month and a half ago, it is safe to say that someone can really lose hours there admiring all there is to buy. Check out the article to learn more about the awesome Australian city that is Melbourne.

Taking Blogging to the Corporate World

After today's class on blogging in the 21st century, as narrated by Toby of The Diva Marketing Blog, I thought I would delve a little further into what a corporation needs to address/do in order to successfully set up a blog site. (Toss of a pink boa back at you Toby!) I found out through readings on The Diva Marketing Blog (circa Nov 2006) that a company must first start off by asking two very important questions:
One
: Can your organization support the open, conversational, transparent culture of blogging?
Two
: Will blogs help solve a business challenge or support your overall marketing strategy?
According to the blog, if the answer is "yes" to the aforementioned questions, you are well on your way to establishing a advantageous blog...CONGRATULATIONS! The fantastic thing about blogs/social media, is that it can be used as a credible marketing strategy and provide key market research information. In order to be successful, blogs must incorporate a strategic direction...namely that of your business's ojectives. Naturally, the next steps are as follows:
One: Decide your blogging objectives
Two: Set up a blog account! (Google's muse is cheap and easy to use)
YES, it is really that easy. If you feel you are not up to setting up a business oriented blog just yet, participate in other blog discussions to become familiar with the type of postings and feedback given in your "social community." Happy Blogging!

Wiki Edit: Hempfield High School

It's my second time around on Wiki, and I must say, it is getting much easier. Today I chose to elaborate on the Hempfield High School article. There is so much to be said for my alma mater that it is hard to figure out where to start. Naturally, I would love to post first hand accounts concerning this glorious academic institution in the middle of "Amish Paradise", but I doubt that my first hand narative would be good addition. I decided instead to add some cold hard facts to the article. As of now, HHS offers 19 AP courses to their students. Although that is a respectable number, I feel they did/do not do a good enough job promoting these courses and advising students to participate. I am hoping by making this addition, students will atleast know that there are more than a handful of AP classes available. This may even encourage students to check in with their guidance counselors for a full course run down....one can only hope! Hindsight is always 20/20, but I personally wish that I would have been directed to participate in more courses. I mean, getting a semester's worth of mundane credits out of the way before you get into college is a pretty sweet deal! I also added the nice little fact that almost 80% of HHS graduates go on to institutions of higher learning. Hopefully that will encourage parents to talk to their kids about where they want to go after they graduate. As a minor side note, I am curious to know where they got their top list of higher institution attendance...where is U of D?!!!

High School of the Future

After perusing through the required sites on Bloglines, I came across a pretty cool concept that I had to investigate further on Scobleizer's Tech Geek Blogger. Apparently in the heart of Silicon Valley and San Diego there are schools that are completely centered around helping kids learn old lessons strictly through new age technologies. What makes this article/high school even more interesting is that these schools are public. That is right folks, it is completely government funded! I believe that helping students engage in their work through the use of today's technologies is a great way to build core academic necessities. Today kids are so withdrawn from the course work and are often at a disconnect with the whole learning process. This school is seeking to change all of that. It even has 100% placement rate into college. Ask yourself this question: when has a traditional public school even achieved that?! Check out High Tech High School for a direct link to the schools main web page.

Wiki Edit: Manuel Antonio National Park

Today I attempted my first ever Wikipedia edit. I decided to start with my favorite beach/park in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio. This small beach town is composed of two seperate beaches and a beautiful national park. I decided to start off by just adding a little to the biodiversity content and see where that takes me. I contributed to the body of the paragraph with the addition of the fact that Manuel Antonio is Costa Rica's smallest national park, but full of different species of tropical animals. I was told this by our tour guide in Costa Rica, as well as witnessed it first hand. I then verified this fact on a variety of different national websites. There is a lot more I want to add to this site in the future so stay tuned! In the mean time, check out the article for some warm and sunny pictures!

I am one of the lucky students who gets the chance to explore the world of marketing through a blogger's eyes. Along with my BUAD 477 class, I will be on a mission to understand the vast potential a blog can bring to a company and their marketing campaigns. Hopefully Professor Brown will be patient seeing how I am anything but a pro at computer things! :) Check out our class site. It is full of good stuff. Ciao!
